Have Comprehensive Knowledge about Clinical Psychiatry and Neuroscience
Clinical Psychiatry and Neuroscience: An open-access journal dedicated to the study of scientific research on mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, autism, ADHD, major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and adjustment disorder. It also covers other conditions like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease. The journal aims to provide the latest knowledge on mental illnesses and psychotherapy drugs to its readers worldwide.
In our recent issue, we have published a research article titled "Caring for caregivers: impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of health care workers" by Mirabela Bodic from the Department of Psychiatry at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, USA.
The article discusses the unprecedented levels of psychological stress faced by Health Care Workers (HCWs) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It highlights the impact of COVID-19 on HCWs based on their exposure to patients and the nature of their work.
The mental health of HCWs has been a challenging topic of discussion, as they constantly work in emotionally charged environments with heavy workloads, where seeking help may be stigmatized. However, investing in the mental health of HCWs is crucial to mitigate risks such as medical errors, patient falls, infections, and low patient satisfaction scores. With the declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020, HCWs faced unprecedented demands and stressors on top of pre-existing psychiatric conditions. The prevalence of mental health symptoms, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD, has been significantly high among HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly among frontline workers.
The research conducted at Maimonides Medical Center focuses on assessing the levels of depression, anxiety, PTSD symptoms, substance use, and overall well-being among HCWs. The study includes various staff members involved in the treatment and management of COVID-19 patients, such as physicians, nurses, technicians, clerical staff, maintenance staff, and administrators. The aim is to understand the impact of COVID-19 on the psychological well-being of HCWs and identify factors contributing to their distress. The findings will inform the development of clinical and policy strategies to support HCWs during high-stress public health crises. The study also explores barriers to seeking mental health care, including the need for culturally competent care, fear of stigma, and the desire for anonymity.
