Reduced and Oxidized Forms:

Redox is short for reduction-oxidation. When an electron is transferred to or from a molecule or ion, the oxidation state of the molecule or ion is altered. Both the application of external voltage and the release of chemical energy can trigger this reaction. When atoms, ions, or molecules involved in an electrochemical reaction alter their oxidation state, it is referred to as oxidation or reduction. Formally, the charge that an atom would have if all of its links to atoms of various elements were 100% ionic is known as the oxidation state. The oxidation state of an atom or ion that donates an electron to another atom or ion increases, whereas the oxidation state of the atom or ion that receives the negatively charged electron decreases.
